A history of the Adelantado, Hernando de Soto, Governor and Captain General of the kingdom of Florida, and of other
heroic Spanish and Indian cavaliers, written by The Inca, Garcilaso de la Vega, an officer of His Majesty, and a native
of the great city of Cuzco, capital of the realms and provinces of Peru. Included in this volume The Inca's Dedication,
The Inca's Preface, Book the First through Six. The type ornaments, tail-pieces and other decorative devices were
reproduced from the 1723 Madrid edition of La Florida and from specimens of 17th and 18th century Spanish printing in
a private collection. Decorative initial letters were reproduced from a set of the 1598 London edition of The Principal
Navigations, Voyages, Fraffiques, and Discovoueries of the English Nation by Richard Hakluyt, which is in the Rare
Book Collections of the University of Texas. Drawings for the frontispiece and end paper maps by Reese Brandt, the
endpapers, in sepia/brown, showing "Route of De Soto's Army through La Florida 1539-1543." Large, thick 8vo, 655 pages,
index. tan linen-weave cloth binding with brown lettering and decoration, top edge stained brown to match. Good to
fine condition with the dust jacket chipped.
